MISSION VIEJO, ORANGE COUNTY — November 7, 2026. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced a Saturday traffic operation targeting suspected violations of California’s hands-free mobile-device law.
What officers will look for
According to the department’s November 5 notice, deputies plan enforcement on November 7 focusing on drivers who appear to handle phones or other devices contrary to state law. Distracted driving can delay reaction times, especially at intersections and near pedestrians and cyclists.
What the law generally requires
California law prohibits most drivers from holding a phone while driving. Drivers generally must use permitted hands-free options and should complete navigation or messaging adjustments before moving. Special restrictions also apply to younger drivers. A law-enforcement emphasis on one type of violation does not mean other traffic laws are suspended during the operation.
Practical safety steps
Set a destination and audio choices before departure, place the device in an appropriate mount where legally permitted, and pull over somewhere safe before interacting with a phone in a distracting manner. The department’s announcement establishes a planned operation, not its eventual citation or arrest totals. Any outcome figures should be obtained from official post-operation reporting.
